Peter Johnson: The Muse

By Sean Bickerton | December 10, 2002Email Article
To understand just how extraordinary Peter Johnson is, one has to ask how a sixteen-year-old kid from Green Bay, WI, went on to so inspire some of the world's best photographers.

The teenaged Johnson was discovered by Bruce Weber at a wrestling camp. Since that discovery, he has been photographed by Weber six or seven times for Ralph Lauren, three times for Abercrombie and Fitch, four times for Versace and once for Perry Ellis, and is the sole subject of a book of several hundred Weber photographs of the model called The Chop Suey Club.

Johnson will also star in a new movie under the same title ("The Chop Suey Club") to be released later this Fall. And if that were all, it would be a spectacular enough career for Johnson given that he is still only twenty.

But other great fashion photographers like Nathaniel Goldberg, Roger Moenks, Karl Simone, Stewart Shining, Aldo Rossi and Pablo Alfaro have also found this boyish icon of American masculinity compelling - Johnson currently has campaigns out for Club Monaco, ESQ watches and Ralph Lauren Chaps as well as an instore for Gap underwear.
