Steven Strait: Strait to the Top

Page 7 Email Article

You also shot with Dah Len for Spoon Magazine?

Yes, at Joe Greer's boxing gym in Patterson, NJ, which was cool to do because I actually box. So I got to fool around with the speed bag all day and had an awesome time doing it.

I understand that you worked with David Bosman as a photographer?

Yes, he was really cool to work with.

What was the idea for the shoot?

They were looking for somewhere with a lot of color, and I always ride my bike up and down the west side in the summers, so I knew Grant's Tomb would be really cool because they have all of these beautifully colored benches around.

You also shot with Collier Schorr for this editorial in Details. Wasn't it a little intimidating at the age of sixteen to be photographed in nothing but a pair of underwear?

It would be wrong for me to say that I didn't think about it, but I don't know, I've never felt too much anxiety about it. I've always been pretty comfortable with my body. It's just underwear. Everybody wears underwear.

You're so comfortable with issues that older guys have trouble with. I think they tend to get too hung up on being thought of as "beautiful," as if that's somehow a feminine characteristic.

Looking at it not being masculine or whatever, it's all in the way you think about things. It's flattering when someone says you'd be good for this because of the way you look. If someone is uncomfortable looking at an image, then they need to deal with their own insecurity.

You're doing amazing things Steven, and working with some extraordinary photographers. I understand that things are also heating up on the acting front?

Yes, I just signed with ICM. Chris Andrews flew out from Los Angeles to meet me and we just clicked. We had the same interests, and he's into all the things I've been training for and the things that I love. And after talking for a while he told me that he could set me up for all that. I was blown away. Overwhelmingly happy.

Congratulations, that representation is worth a lot. Where do you see yourself going? What do you want to do over the next few years?

ICM has been sending me out for some really good stuff ...

So you're auditioning for parts now?

Yeah, for lots of films. And I'm getting good feedback.

Are we going to see you on the silver screen?

I don't want to jinx myself, but I hope so. I love to act, that's what I want to do, and I'd be so happy if I could do a film. And I really have to thank John for it all. I just can't say enough good about Boss and John because they're so great.

Well, you're with the agency that changed the whole picture — that put men out front. And speaking about putting men first, what do you think about a website like ModelSwim that focuses on the men's industry?

Really cool. I think it's great you've got a site dedicated to guys. Most of the time the men are the background pieces. This is so unique. Also, in this business, you rarely find out information the easy way. Very rarely. (laughs) So it's great to be able to take advantage when it's available, the way it is here.

What are you listening to these days?

I'm a classic rock guy. One album I've been listening to a lot lately is 'Exile on Main Street' by the Rolling Stones. Sticky Fingers too. I'm a huge Stones fan.
